- TSTC serves students from 220 of the 254 Texas counties, with the vast majority of these counties being in rural areas which lack access to other institutions of higher education or workforce training.
- TSTC students are a diverse group demographically. They are 56.87% minority (45.3% Hispanic, 9.2% black, 2.3% other minorities) and 43.2% white. The number of female students is steadily increasing, with a 31% increase in the last six years.
- TSTC graduates are also diverse, with 46.7% being minority students (37.9% Hispanic, 6.6% black, and 2.2% other minorities) and 53.3% being white.
- TSTC students often come from a lower socio-economic level than most Texans. The average TSTC student on financial aid comes from a family with less than one-half the median income for a family of four in Texas.
- TSTC students are often from educationally-challenged backgrounds. More than 60% require remediation upon enrollment, and 63.9% report financial aid as a chief source of support.
- TSTC includes colleges that rank high in associate degrees conferred, both in Texas and the nation.
